If you’re behind on your mortgage or just got a notice of default, the first call is to your loan servicer’s loss mitigation department. That’s the team that handles modifications, repayment plans, forbearance and short sales. Here are the numbers for the largest servicers, plus free help that costs you nothing.
Before you call
- Have your loan number, last two pay stubs, two months of bank statements and last year’s tax return in front of you.
- Ask for your reinstatement amount and the date it’s good through.
- Ask which programs you qualify for and what documents they need.
- Get everything in writing. Write down every name and date.
Loss mitigation numbers by lender
Your monthly statement names the company that services your loan. That company is the one to call, even if a different bank made the loan. Tap your servicer to see the number.
